ouijabortion: Adventure Time and the Occult 1. The demon’s name “Ogdoad”, whom Peppermint Butler summons, is a reference to a group of 8 deities worshipped in Ancient Egypt, as well as a concept in gnosticism referring to the 7 spheres or heavens of the Sun, Moon, Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, Venus, and Saturn, plus an 8th outer sphere the 8 emanations of the divine Aeons: the Nous (mind), Aletheia (truth), Logos (word), Zoe (life), Anthropos (man), and Ekklesia (“church”), which comprise the Pleroma, or the Godhead 2. The figures of the bull, angel, lion, and eagle are esoteric symbols found in mysticism as well as Christian doctrine and mysticism, symbolizing: the four apostles, Luke, Matthew, Mark, and John (respectively), seen sitting near the Throne of God the four parts of the Greco-Egyptian sphinx or the Assyrian Shedu/Lamassu, and also of the angels known as “Living Creatures” in the Book of Ezekiel, also known as the Cherubim or Hayyoth in the Kabbalah the four elements of earth (ox), water (angel), air (eagle), and fire (lion), which often represent the ascending complexity of states of matter or being: solid (earth), fluid (water), vapor (air), and plasma (fire) 3. Cinnamon Bun is suspended upside down, reminiscent of the Hanged Man, the 12th Major Arcana card of the Tarot, often a symbol of the process of death-rebirth in the pursuit of sacred esoteric knowledge or gnosis of the Hermetic/alchemical “Great Work”, or in other words, self-sacrifice to attain henosis, or union with the divine 4. The triangle in which Peppermint Butler is standing in, though not assigned any specific meaning, is symbolic of the Trinity (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) in Christianity as well as the sacred unity of the mind, body, and spirit in general mysticism and the alchemical trinity of salt, mercury, and sulphur 4. One other thing to note is the very subtle symbolism of the background: the tunnel leading outward (to the material world) is cloudy and ominous, while deep within the tunnel, the glowing amber symbolizes hidden knowledge within. This can be interpreted different ways by different people, however. Oh and these are things, too. “Do what thoust will shall be the whole piece of law.” And BAM your favorite cartoon contains occult references and imagery. We can all learn something from Adventure Time.
