We wonder why some have no difficulty whatsoever in leading rather selfish lives and are concerned from beginning to end largely with the advancement of their own private purposes. In contrast to these is a small but ever unfolding minority seemingly born with a different destiny. This is the group from which the heroes come. On a very high level of integration they become great leaders of world progress. They are perfectly willing at any time to give up what they have for others. This is their way of life. These are the Bodhisattvas. The Bodhisattva represents the highest attainment possible to individual consciousness. Here is the source of wisdom, love, faith, hope, charity, and compassion. Seeking within himself the source of these attributes, the individual finally comes to the luminous center of his own being. So the Bodhisattva, having come as far along the path as it is possible to come, pauses at the gate of the Eternal and turns back. Instead of choosing to go into the infinite, he chooses to return as a teacher of his fellow creatures. The Bodhisattva is the one who has taken the obligation that he will not seek the great peace until the smallest gnat floating in a sunbeam can go with him. It is absolute life.
