Tuscany is a beautiful place. I was there for a wedding and so didn’t get out in the popular sunrise/set times. However I did get to walk among the fireflies at night.

This is me on an old dirt road I’d found by walking through the fields under the moonlight. Standing among fireflies looking at the stars, lit mainly by the moon.

There are about 10 minutes worth of fireflies in the shot. The moonlit scene makes them more of a subtle addition to the image but I think this keeps things in balance. The light in my hand is an LED adapted Maglite, covered by a Lee microfibre cloth. The cloth was folded thinner on top to try and get a bit of light on my face.

Just standing watching the fireflies was incredible, and I learnt a lot about how to get the best out of them – their reaction, to light, sound, proximity etc.
