Photo by @ciriljazbec / There are thousands of churches in Slovenia. Villages without a church are a rarity, and there’s also a number of lone churches perched on hilltops. These are considered a Slovenian peculiarity tied to locations of pre-Christian cults and to high-altitude refuges of the aboriginal population. Breginj is the westernmost major settlement along the Slovenian-Italian border. In 1976, a number of earthquake tremors caused great damage in Breginj, sparing only the Church with the clergy house and two homesteads that have later been renovated and are now considered cultural monuments. The Church of Saint Mary of the Snows in Breginjski kot stands on a small hill above Breginj.
