Having spent the last 2 days umming and ahhing about where to head next, and when… with such an undecided weather forecast… I ended up going out last night to the Chew Valley again. With 1hr between sunset and the train, this location on the south side which I’d had in mind for a while became possible.

For my 6hrs of walking (I went over for my first viewing of Laddow Rocks – a bit heady!) the sky was endless grey – dramatic, but grey, with just a sliver of hope on the north western horizon. I had a feeling though, with the weather being similar to my last visits to Bamford Edge and that spectacular evening at Roseberry Topping – that the sky might miraculously clear as the atmospheric temperature changed around sunset. Ideally the low cloud would have remained, but I could hardly complain – it’s much better this way around than for all those times the sliver of hope on the horizon fills in – with the sun never to be seen again. So, not the moody sunset I’d set my heart on, but pretty beautiful nonetheless.

The light only lasted a matter of minutes – so I’d made sure to plan ahead whilst eating my tea as to which compositions nearby might work – then it was just a matter of dashing between them. This post is being written at 1am though as I’ve just got in, and this is my first quick edit for the morning – so it may not be perfect, but a taste of what I got to enjoy.

In other news – on Saturday I’m planning a 4am start to complete a 30 mile version of the Yorkshire 3 Peaks. It’s the usual route with the addition of the whole ridge of Whernside, a detour via Ingleton, Little Ingleborough and Plover Hill… so 5 Peaks really. I’ve wanted to pass the 30 mile mark in a single day’s walking for a while now, coming close last year, so it’ll be nice if I can finally do it on one of my favourite walks. But at the same time, I may actually fail this one – I know how much those miles hurt after 20 miles and I do have a bit of a gammy leg. So I’m sharing this plan around as much as possible to pile on the pressure for me to complete it!

As an added bonus – you can all try and guess times for me. It’d be nice to do it in under 12hrs, but what do you think?
