Covering 50,000 km2, the Selous Game Reserve is one of the largest protected areas in Africa, famous for its large numbers of elephants, black rhinos, wild dogs and other big game. But extensive poaching has led to a tragic decline in its elephant and rhino populations whose numbers have dropped by nearly 90 % since the reserve was listed as a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1982.
