Photograph by @thomaspeschak The shallow Danajon Bank used to be one of the most productive marine realms in the Philippines, but decades of overfishing have taken its toll. Today seaweed farming is often the only viable economic activity left for many impoverished communities. Conservation and social up-liftment programs by @projectseahorse and other NGOs are trying to improve the odds for both people and biodiversity. Nature Tourism, sustainable aquarium fisheries and a novel project that turns discarded fishing nets into carpet tiles are all designed to help restore the Danajon’s Banks once legendary productivity and diversity. @ilcp_photographers @thephotosociety @natgeocreative For more images from this unique marine realm and the conservation measures to protect it please follow @thomaspeschak by natgeo http://ift.tt/1icR3Ri
