El 13 de julio de 1985, las principales figuras del rock se juntaron en el estadio de Wembley, Londres, y en el J.F.K de Filadelfia. El principal objetivo fue de recaudar fondos en beneficio para la población de Etiopía y Somalia. La figura complicada era Queen. A mediados de los ’80, Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor y John Deacon dominaban la escena rockera, con varios discos editados y grandes presentaciones. Geldof se puso en contacto con Brian May. El organizador le detalló al guitarrista la importancia de formar parte de este evento. Para 1985, Queen había presentado con muy buenas respuestas el disco The Works. Cada uno de los integrantes estaban con sus planes personales, alejados de los escenarios. Finalmente, el grupo aceptó.
