Meanwhile, Ukraine’s counter-offensive enters a second month and officials concede it’s going slower than expected. But some progress has been made.

The biggest territorial gains for Ukraine have been near Velyka Novosilk, southwest of Donetsk, where Ukrainian forces have been able to liberate four villages. DW Special Correspondent Aya Ibrahim was one of the few reporters given access to the area – where she found out first hand why people are reluctant to return.
