• @natgeo,Photograph by Davidcoventry, @davidcoventry, Sunset at The Parthenon The Parthenon – or parts of it at least – can be found in London, Paris, Copenhagen, the Vatican, Vienna, Wurzburg, Munich and, most obviously, Athens. This esteemed 2500-year-old Greek temple sits on a large rock overlooking Athens, but today we just see the bones. One of the earliest symbols of a civilised world has seen its details stripped away and deposited in various museums, most notably the British Museum, which has been proudly displaying 75 metres of the Parthenon’s marble sculptures for almost 200 years. The Parthenon has had a long and active history, packed with multiple functions, abuse, and controversy, but still it stands, and it remains as revered today as it was upon completion way back in 438 BC. The Parthenon is a former temple on the Athenian Acropolis, Greece, dedicated to the goddess Athena, whom the people ofAthens considered their patron. Construction began in 447 BC when the Athenian Empire was at the height of its power. It was completed in 438 BC although decoration of the building continued until 432 BC. It is the most important surviving building of Classical Greece, generally considered the zenith of the Doric order. Its decorative sculptures are considered some of the high points of Greek art. The Parthenon is regarded as an enduring symbol of Ancient Greece, Athenian democracy and western civilization, and one of the world’s greatest cultural monuments. The Greek Ministry of Culture is currently carrying out a program of selective restoration and reconstruction to ensure the stability of the partially ruined structure,#ancientgreece, #parthenon,#greece, #greektemples, #athens by natgeo http://ift.tt/1J7sNsw

• In a small village in Thailand’s Sakon Nakhon Province, Phukradung Ungjaroensukan (@phukradung) grows fruit trees on his family’s farm. But his true pride and joy are the native Thai water buffalo that he’s raising there. Four years ago, three of the animals were on their way to a slaughterhouse before Phukradung and his wife, along with friends who made financial contributions, rescued them. Now, the herd has grown to six — including three calves that were born on the farm. Over the years, Phukradung has developed a deep affinity for the creatures. “They can recognize their owners very well,” he says. “Khao Pan, the six-month-old calf, always makes a sound and approaches me whenever she sees me.” For Phukradung, documenting the animals serves as a way to let others know just how precious they are. “I post their pictures on Instagram not only to let people see the buffalo from my point of view, but also to let all the people who saved the three buffalo see how they are living now.” Photo by @phukradung by instagram http://ift.tt/1NHYMAN

• Photo by @stephenwilkes: In February of 2006, six months after Hurricane Katrina, I traveled to New Orleans to document the devastation, instead I found hope. At town meetings, I met survivors determined to rebuild their homes and communities in the face of insurmountable odds. I was in awe of their inner strength. I wanted to give voice to those that had been all but forgotten; I wanted their stories to be told. Of varied backgrounds, professions, and ethnicities, a thread ran through everyone I met—a deep sense of faith and an enduring sense of hope. I am at a loss to describe them as anything short of heroic. I hoped their stories would inspire others to return to the Gulf Coast, and help maintain focus on an area whose story, ten years ago, was only just beginning. #Katrina #KatrinaAnniversary #aftermath #hope #louisiana #neworleans #nola by natgeo http://ift.tt/1JmmJ0F
