• M31, the Andromeda Galaxy – The famous Andromeda Galaxy is the nearest large galaxy to our own Milky Way. It is so bright that under dark skies it is easily seen by naked eye as a fuzzy patch of light in the northern part of the constellation of Andromeda. Also seen in this photograph are M31’s companion galaxies M110 (below) and M32 (above). M31 is a gigantic collection of billions of stars estimated to be 2.5 million light years away. It has been observed since ancient times and was first catalogued by astronomers as long ago as 905 AD. by write_adam via http://flic.kr/p/L1VCf

• M42, the Great Orion Nebula – The Great Orion Nebula (M42) and its companion, the Running Man Nebula (NGC1977), are located in the ‘Sword’ part of the constellation of Orion, just below the easternmost of the three stars that comprise Orion’s belt. Approximately 1500 light years away, M42 is a turbulent cloud of gas and dust, and a star-forming region of particular interest to astro-geeks like me. A number of hot young stars (mmm…hot young stars…) fuel the dense swathes of surrounding gas, causing it to ionize and produce its glow. by write_adam via http://flic.kr/p/L1VC1

• M31, Andromeda Galaxy [explored] – You all know this one … Andromeda is the nearest large galaxy to the Milky Way (approx 2.5 million ly away), and similar to ours in size and structure. It’s huge – even at that distance it appears about 6 full moons across. M31 is so bright that it can be seen with the naked eye from dark skies, and I regularly catch it through binoculars even from downtown Toronto. She also has a couple of companion galaxies – M32 is the small one above it, and M110 is the elliptical one below it. All of the (non-galaxy) stars in this field are part of our Milky Way, and relatively nearby – positioned between us and the distant galaxies. Think of it as if you’re looking through snowflakes at a distant object. Details for astronerds: L:R:G:B combine (minutes) = 80:25:25:35 FSQ-85 and STL11000M Taken from dark skies near Havelock, Ontario, Canada on August 6, 2010. • Orion constellation panorama – [Intro for the non-astronomers] This field covers a swath of one of the most interesting parts of the sky. At about 15 full moons wide, it stretches from Orion’s sword at right through the Horsehead and Flame nebula at center, with all surrounded by huge swaths of hydrogen gas and dust. A great reminder that our galaxy is not just made of stars! [Nerdy intro for the astro-folk] After much agonizing time staring at my screen, I’m done with this mosaic. 2 frames, roughly 15% overlap, then cropped. (Can’t imagine how guys like Rogelio do 20-frame mosaics!) For the RGB, I used a combo of 90 minutes taken from home (new moon, but still badly light polluted) and some old DSLR data from 2 years ago taken under dark skies. Aligning the Ha and RGB was a pain due to this as well as slight field rotation in the Ha. Ha was blended with pseudo-Lum (from the RGB), then blended as Luminance in PS with the RGB. Please forgive the Blue haloes … my filters are chronically haloed and this is exacerbated by the Ha as it has smaller stars. Hydrogen-alpha-only version can be found here. Details: Hydrogen-alpha = Baader 7.5nm, 8 x 20 min (right panel has an extra 10 x 1 min Ha, layer masked over M42’s core) RGB = 18 x 5 min exposures each Telescope = Takahashi FSQ-85EDX Camera = STL-11000M Mount = EQ6 Pro Software = capture, stacking and alignment in MaximDL; mosaicking, levels and cropping in Photoshop Date = Several nights in October and November 2010 Location = downtown Toronto, Canada by write_adam via http://flic.kr/p/8WCvFg
