• The country of Burundi has gone to the polls today to elect its president. The incumbent, President Pierre Nkurunziza, is widely expected to win a third consecutive term despite international condemnation after he ignored the country’s constitutional limit of two terms. Nkurunziza argued that since he didn’t serve his two terms consecutively, the rule shouldn’t apply. In this photograph by Phil Moore (follow him on Instagram @philmoorephoto) of @afpphoto—@gettyimages, a woman stands behind an election booth as she prepares to cast her vote in the village of Buye, the hometown of Burundi’s president in Ngozi province, northern Burundi, on July 21, 2015. by time http://ift.tt/1LBkXJB

• Photo by @irablockphoto (Ira Block) The Golden Pavilion, Kinkaku-ji, or Rokuon-ji is a Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan. The structure has been burnt down many times since it was built in the late 14th century. The most recent fire was set by a fanatic monk in 1950. The temple was restored in 1955 and has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage site. @thephotosociety @natgeocreative #goldenpavilion #kinkakuji #rokuonji #buddhism #kyoto #serenity #sonya7ii by natgeo http://ift.tt/1JwfkIc

• This is a Goliath Beetle one of the largest insects in the world. It is one of over 450,000 known species of Beetles. The diversity is due to #NaturalSelection the vehicle that makes #Evolution work. It was 90 years ago today, July 21, 1925 that John Scopes was found guilty of teaching human evolution despite the efforts if his attorney, Clarence Darrow. The case was appealed to the Tennessee Supreme Court where the conviction was set aside…..because Scopes was fined $100 and state law prohibited a fine of more than $50. The US Supreme Court, in 1968, that such laws violate the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. #Evolution #guiltyofTeachingEvolution @thephotosociety @natgeo @instituteartist @robertclarkphoto by natgeo http://ift.tt/1HQ0vjC

• As a nursing student from a small town in the American Midwest, Alex Potter (@alexkpotter) might not have imagined living through airstrikes and civil war in the Middle East. But a university trip to Jordan sparked an interest in learning Arabic and led her to Yemen, where she now lives and works as a freelance photographer and writer. Despite the crisis around her, the 25-year-old describes Yemen as “the easiest place I have ever worked — especially as a woman.” She adds, “I dress like a local to respect the culture and speak the local dialect, so that helps, but everyone wants their photo taken all the time.” While she photographs across the region from Eritrea to Kurdistan, Alex still works occasional stints as a nurse during visits home to the United States. “I go back to Minnesota to do some nursing work, center myself and see family and friends,” she says. “Personal relationships are important to me, and it’s difficult but essential to stay connected to those who know me the best, especially in this line of work.” Photo by @alexkpotter by instagram http://ift.tt/1JxDBxw

• photo by @randyolson | words by @neilshea13 — In the old days, when my father was a child, we didn’t have rifles. We carried spears and clubs, and rifles were for white men and soldiers. But slowly they came in from the west, from Sudan, and everything changed. We Mursi live on the far side of the Omo and there are no bridges, so we were among the last to get them. For a while it was very bad. Back then, if hot-heads came downriver with guns, they took what they wanted. No sense could reach them, no speech was sweet in their ears. Many times we were victims and could only run into the bush or die. Now, we have rifles and our enemies think twice. Everyone thinks twice. Listen, a man must have these things: land, cattle, children. Without land you cannot feed the cattle. Without cattle you cannot pay for a bride. Without a bride you will not have children. Lacking these things leaves a man feeling hungry. Only when he has them all can he be taken seriously. And then he picks up a rifle to defend them. Do you understand? Yes, it’s true that the forest has become quieter. Guns changed that, too. There were once many animals—buffalo, gazelles, lions, leopards. Elephants were very dangerous and sometimes crashed through the village. On the river hippos were most savage of all. Today the hunters find far fewer animals, and a kind of silence waits in the bush. But I won’t say it’s bad. Fools and white men may miss the lion. Missionaries may talk of mercy. I can show you a place where bones still cover the ground, and that is the silence I remember. For the last six years, Randy Olson and I have been documenting culture, change, and conflict in the watershed that connects southern Ethiopia and northern Kenya. In the August issue of @natgeo magazine we’ll publish the latest in our series, #NGwatershedstories. The water that becomes the Delta originates in the Angolan highlands and forms a complex web that relies heavily on management by Angola, Namibia, and Botswana. Use of the waters that flood the delta every year sustaining wildlife such as this is key to its longevity as a cohesive ecosystem. @thephotosociety @natgeocreative @eddiebauer #okavango15 posted from the field by natgeo http://ift.tt/1TQnBhC
