Photo by @mattiasklumofficial in Cameroon for @natgeo. Deadly coiled-up beauty! The Boomslang is one of the most incredible snakes of Africa. It’s diurnal and almost exclusively arboreal which makes it a challenge to photograph. Please go to @mattiasklumofficial to look this killer beauty in the eye and to learn why this species might save lives in the near future! #boomslang #cameroon #death #snake #conservation #new #drugs #innovation #mattiasklum #ecosystemservices #respectnature @natgeo @thephotosociety by natgeo http://ift.tt/1HCEPHE

photo by @chien_chi_chang /@magnumphotos Daughters (in Fuzhou, China) of Chinese immigrants in New York’s Chinatown. This photo is from a two-decade long project (still work in progress) following 20 divided families. The compelling quality of this project is its universality. It is about the essential human need to hold hope in your hands and about having the willingness to sacrifice one’s own immediate happiness to realize the dream of giving children a “better” life. But is economic prosperity worth the social cost? Perhaps the answers to such questions we all ponder can be found in the lives of the people left behind in China and in those of the second and third generation immigrants growing up in the United States. Look at them, and listen to their voices. You may not understand their language, but you can feel their longing. #immigrant #immigration #chinatown #newyorkchinatown #women #daughter by natgeo http://ift.tt/1M9kBup

Photo by @ciriljazbec / There are thousands of churches in Slovenia. Villages without a church are a rarity, and there’s also a number of lone churches perched on hilltops. These are considered a Slovenian peculiarity tied to locations of pre-Christian cults and to high-altitude refuges of the aboriginal population. Breginj is the westernmost major settlement along the Slovenian-Italian border. In 1976, a number of earthquake tremors caused great damage in Breginj, sparing only the Church with the clergy house and two homesteads that have later been renovated and are now considered cultural monuments. The Church of Saint Mary of the Snows in Breginjski kot stands on a small hill above Breginj. From the church and the cemetery beside it a great vista opens towards the summits around Breginjski kot. @natgeo @ciriljazbec #Slovenia #Europe #Breginj #church #landscape by natgeo http://ift.tt/1JmHFRa

For Hitoshi Kobayashi (@twinleaves) from Tokyo, Japan, the sceneries that excite his photographic endeavors are not the urban landscape or the modern architecture found inside the city center, but rather the decades-old stores and houses which he discovers in suburban neighborhoods. “I’ve just been capturing whatever that catches my attention in the streets, but come to think of it, I think I’m naturally drawn to things that tell stories about people’s lives,” he says. “Timeworn buildings, overused dustpans and even small inventions like attaching a broken door with a string — these are the kinds of things that I find fascinating,” explains Hitoshi. Over time, his photography has evolved from snapping nostalgic moments to capturing straight facades of aged buildings. “The appearance of the facade changes even with the slightest trim,” he reveals. “It takes forever for me to walk through an old town — because when I’m walking, my eyes and head are so busy trying to trim the reality in front of me.” Photo by @twinleaves by instagram http://ift.tt/1RDALkv

Photo by @tyronefoto (Tyrone Turner). I saw Marlon as he was walking along Gentilly Boulevard towards his home in New Orleans East. He welcomed my question about the crown and said that this is what he was wearing to work as a food runner in one of the downtown hotels. Originally from the Lower Ninth Ward, after the storm he bounced from Las Vegas to Memphis to Baton Rouge to Houston before coming home 2 years ago. “I’ve seen some nice places but there’s no place like home.” @natgeocreative @thephotosociety #myneworleansstory #passiton #nola #katrinatenyears #louisiana by natgeo http://ift.tt/1J4TIa4

Photograph by @thomaspeschak This constantly shape shifting school of jacks/trevally inhabits the rich waters of Cabo Pulmo Marine Reserve. The dorsal fins of the uppermost fish break the oceans surface while deepest fish scrape their bellies on the sandy seabed 20 m below. photo by @randyolson | words by @neilshea13 — One day he went into the forest alone. He had in mind what he wanted. Not every boy knows with such clarity who he prefers for a companion but he had decided on a baboon. The boy somehow captured the animal. The details are vague. This is what he said. To tell you the truth, I don’t believe it. Though he had a certain kind of courage no boy this small has any business chasing dangerous animals around so far outside the Suri village. Especially not in the nurseries of big mother baboons, which are all teeth and banshee shrieking. In any case the beginning is irrelevant. There is always a boy like this, and a baboon without a name. For a while they would be great friends. Everyday they wandered and played together. House to house, aunt to aunt, asking food, wasting time. They are coming to be almost the same age, human and baboon lives passing like satellites, their orbits nearing, nearing. In the afternoons they walked in long cool shadows, just the pair of them. In the evenings the baboon slept curled beside him. It was saddest because you knew it couldn’t last. After this brief perigee the baboon would grow bigger, stronger, surpassing the boy’s young courage, willful and unpredictable as everything that lives. Then the decision so far suspended would come down, and it would not be the boy’s to make. But let’s don’t talk about that. The daydream can play out a little longer. See how the boy has painted its face. See how it holds him, how it desires to be held. This is a dream you will recognize, one we’ve shared. To be understood for a moment beyond words. For the last six years, Randy Olson and I have been documenting culture, change, and conflict in the watershed that connects southern Ethiopia and northern Kenya. In the August issue of @natgeo magazine we’ll publish the latest in our series, #NGwatershedstories. Join us at @randyolson and @neilshea13 as we follow water through the desert. #2009 #africa #ethiopia #omoriver #suri #baboon #tradition #rivers #conservation @geneticislands #documentary #instajournalism #instaessay #takenotes #natgeo @thephotosociety #portrait by natgeo http://ift.tt/1OcpjGl

As a child #WendyChristensen came to the local zoo and she would watch #Samson, he was alive, and a huge celebrity in the city. Once Wendy became the #taxidermist at the #MilwaukeePublicMuseum she faced a challenge. Samson had passed away. Due to poor preservation of the original and in an effort to evoke the spirit of Samson some decisions had to be made. Christensen decided to produced a re-creation that used no part of the actual gorilla. @thephotosociety @natgeo @robertclarkphoto @instituteartist by natgeo http://ift.tt/1HE0P4X
