Christopher Hitchens warns about Vladimir Putin
Watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKfwgM_VtBs&ab_channel=FallopiumFilms
These are segments from Hitch’s speech “Axis of Evil” given on March 8th, 2005 at the University of Western Ontario. The speech mainly focused on the dictatorships of Iraq, Iran, and North Korea. In these clips however, the Russian regime, ruled by Vladimir Putin (then, and still now), is mentioned. The similarities between these small, tribal, theocratic regimes and that of Putin’s Russia is hauntingly similar. Considering this speech was also over a decade ago, Hitch’s comments on Putin and Russian indignation are strikingly prophetic.

An embargo on Russian oil imports over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine would ‘hit everyone’ in Europe, the Kremlin said Monday, as EU foreign ministers met in Brussels. At least eight people were killed in an overnight bombing in Kyiv as Ukraine rejected an ultimatum to surrender the besieged city of Mariupol to Russian forces. Many of the city’s 400,000 residents remain trapped with little if any food, water and power, and have faced some of the heaviest bombardments since the invasion began on February 24.

Russia: A small town clings to its Soviet past | DW Documentary
The citizens of the provincial Russian town of Yelnya cling to their heroic Soviet past. It was here where the Red Army pushed back Hitler’s troops for the first time in 1941. This documentary from 2019 shows the continued pride in the military that is encouraged from early childhood.
Before the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, parts of the Russian army were concentrated in Yelnya. But even before that, the place was closely linked with the military. For years, annual rituals commemorating the “Great Patriotic War” have been held.
Yelnya has remained economically marginalized ever since the Soviet Union collapsed and young people here have few prospects. Children in Yelnya are raised to become good patriots. Starting at kindergarten age, they march to songs whose meaning they can hardly grasp.
In his documentary, Dmitry Bogolyubov explores how in recent years, the memory of the war victims has been increasingly overshadowed by all-encompassing militarization of society and anti-Western slogans.
