Putin’s Road to War: Julia Ioffe (interview) | FRONTLINE
In an interview for the upcoming FRONTLINE documentary “Putin’s Road to War,” journalist Julia Ioffe discusses Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine — and why she believes the Russian leader is now “more dangerous than he’s ever been at any point in the last 22 years.”
“What he has opened up with this invasion is unthinkable,” Ioffe tells FRONTLINE. “And because he is losing and because the sanctions and the Ukrainians are humiliating him, because he is backed into a corner, he is the most dangerous he has ever been, because it is now existential for him.”
Julia Ioffe is an American journalist who was born in Russia. She is a writer for and founding partner of the media company Puck. She previously reported on politics and world affairs for The Atlantic.
This interview was conducted by FRONTLINE’s Mike Wiser on March 3, 2022. It has been edited for clarity and length.

‘Ukraine is simply the first battle’: Former NATO Supreme Allied Commander Wesley Clark interview
Former NATO Supreme Allied Commander Wesley Clark told DW that he was “surprised by the ineffectiveness of the Russian military” in Ukraine. “The Russians have proven themselves a relatively inept force,” he said. Clarke said “any negotiations will be determined by the outcome on the ground, [which] is determined by the resistance of the Ukrainians” and that NATO should increase its support to Ukraine by giving it “javelins, stingers and as much anti-air and air support as is feasible to do.” Clark added that although it wasn’t possible to establish a “legalistic” no-fly zone in Ukraine, “air support can be provided by nations who are willing to go in.”
When asked if NATO air support could lead to further escalation and the outbreak of a third world war, Clark said “if we fall back and are intimidated by Mr. Putin’s threat of nuclear weapons, if there’s nothing we can do to help Ukraine, then we’ll be dealing with the next crisis on NATO’s territory itself.”
“Escalation by Mr. Putin is not solely under the control of NATO,” Clarke said, adding that Putin may decide to escalate regardless of NATO’s actions. Clarke said that, although Russian forces were currently “checked” on the ground by Ukraine, this could change quickly as Russia ramps up bombing and shelling of population centers. Putin is “trying to steal Ukraine as quietly and quickly as he can,” Clark said. “But he will use massive firepower if necessary.”
Former US general: “Ukraine is going to win this” | DW News
The Pentagon has rejected an offer from the Polish government to transfer fighter jets to the United States for use in Ukraine. Pentagon Press Secretary, John Kirby, says the plan is not “tenable.”
Poland wanted to transfer its Soviet-era MiG-29s to the US, for delivery to the Ukrainian Air Force. The Polish offer was in response to Ukraine’s appeal for fighter planes that its pilots are trained to fly. But the US feared the deal could be viewed by Russia as a hostile move.
DW spoke with Ben Hodges, retired US Army officer and the former commander of US forces in Europe, about the refusal of the US to act as an intermediary for the the MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine.
Hodges said he disagred with the Pentagon’s decision but added that he did not think “that the book is closed on this.”
“I’m willing to bet that we’re going to eventually get there,” he said.
The retired lieutenant general said it was worth considering the option of implementing a no-fly zone, but also other options to help the Ukrainians defend against strikes — which are mostly not coming from Russian planes — including “more intelligence, longer ranges systems where Ukrainians could destroy the source of the damage.”
“We cannot repeat what we did at Srebrenica in 1995, where European soldiers under a UN mandate stood outside the city, while 8,000 Bosnian men and boys were murdered by Republika Syrpska forces,” Hodges told DW.
The former US army officer believes that “Ukraine is going to win this.”
“Russia is not going to get into Kyiv, that Russia has made the decision to transition to attrition warfare and to do that, you have to have time, you have to have unlimited ammunition and you have to have unlimited manpower. And Russia has none of those three,” he said.
