https://www.youtube.com/watch/Ha-Ch8VeTL0 Sarah Paine: How Putin is Destroying Russia as Great Power
Great powers rarely fall in a single blow. They weaken when one strategic gamble closes more doors than it opens. That is the story here.
Putin’s invasion of Ukraine was intended to restore Russia’s stature. Instead, it has accelerated its loss of great-power autonomy. Sanctions, technological isolation, capital flight, and demographic decline have compounded long-standing structural weaknesses. The war did not create Russia’s fragility — it exposed and intensified it.
The most consequential shift has been eastward.
Before 2022, Moscow could hedge between Europe and China. That flexibility is largely gone. Beijing is now Russia’s primary economic outlet, technological supplier, and diplomatic shield. This is not parity; it is asymmetry. China has options. Russia increasingly does not.
That loss of optionality is the real decline. Great powers retain freedom of manoeuvre. They choose their alignments; they are not compelled into them. By overplaying his hand, Putin narrowed Russia’s strategic space and locked it into a position of dependence.
The concept of “death ground” sharpens the point. When leaders perceive existential stakes, escalation becomes easier than retreat. But operating from that mindset reduces flexibility further. It hardens positions and raises the cost of correction.
Russia still possesses nuclear weapons and a UN Security Council seat — the symbols of great-power status. Yet symbol and substance are diverging. Economic dependence on China, constrained policy space, and mounting internal strain point to a quieter reality: a state that looks powerful, but negotiates from weakness.
Putin set out to restore Russian greatness. His pivotal error may instead mark the moment Russia’s great-power status began to erode in substance, even if it remains intact in form.

Beyond the battlefield in Ukraine, Russia is waging an expanded war across Europe. At the Munich Security Conference, Alina Polyakova calls it a “broad shadow war,” warning that attacks on infrastructure and civilian systems are part of a deliberate strategy to weaken the continent.
https://www.youtube.com/watch/saPOm2h6x64 How the US went from global cop to King of the Jungle | Ian Bremmer Explains
Ian Bremmer breaks down how Trump’s second term is reshaping American power — and what it means for the global order.
In the latest “Ian Explains,” Bremmer examines the shift from decades of US-led global leadership to President Trump’s more unilateral “America First” approach. From withdrawing from international agreements to reviving tariffs and allowing key arms control treaties to lapse, the signals suggest Washington is pulling back. But is it?
From forceful action in Venezuela to an explicit doctrine of dominance in the Western Hemisphere, Trump has shown he’s willing to assert American power — just not through the institutions that defined the postwar order. As allies hedge and adversaries like China step into new leadership roles, Bremmer asks whether the United States is retreating from the world, or redefining how it leads it.

“Casualties in Afghanistan in the 80s, which were five per cent of what we’re talking about now, which caused riots in the streets… if Putin has to start mobilising in Moscow, it is recognition that they are losing.”
Putin and the Kremlin’s “horrendous losses” on the frontline could be the straw that “breaks the Russian camel’s back”, says former British Army colonel Hamish de Bretton-Gordon.

https://www.youtube.com/watch/dkRUzPkbQtc Munich Security Conference: Can Europe defend itself without the US? | Ian Bremmer’s Quick Take
At the Munich Security Conference, the mood is clear: Europe no longer assumes the United States will lead. In this Quick Take, Ian Bremmer reports from Munich, where this year’s theme, “Under Destruction,” reflects growing anxiety that the US itself is destabilizing the transatlantic alliance it once anchored.
While European leaders talk openly about autonomy and de-risking from America economically and technologically, the security reality is starkly different. The United States remains overwhelmingly dominant militarily, and Europe lacks both the unity and fiscal capacity to respond independently.
As Ian puts it:
“Recognition doesn’t mean you can respond to it.”
Europe understands the G-Zero world is here. The question is whether it can act like a geopolitical power, or whether it remains constrained by fragmentation and dependence.
