THE ALAN PARSONS SYMPHONIC PROJECT “LIVE IN COLOMBIA” – AVAILABLE AS DVD, BLU-RAY, 2-CD DIGIPAK, 3 VINYL GATEFOLD AND DIGITAL
On the evening of August 31st, 2013, a large crowd gathered at Parque Pies Descalzos in Medellín, Colombia. When Alan Parsons appeared on stage, along with the Medellín Philharmonic Orchestra and his band the audience went wild. This is an audio visual document of that incredible evening.
THE ALAN PARSONS SYMPHONIC PROJECT “Live in Colombia” is available now on earMUSIC as DVD, Blu-ray, 2-CD digipak, 3 x Vinyl, and download.
Alan Parsons was 19 years old when he landed a job at the world famous Abbey Road Studios, an important first step on his journey to becoming a world class engineer, producer and artist. Following his beginnings with George Martin and The Beatles, his contribution to Pink Floyd’s classic ‘The Dark Side Of The Moon’ earned him worldwide attention. As a producer he had many hits with Pilot, John Miles, Ambrosia and Al Stewart. Together with his manager and creative partner at the time, Eric Woolfson, he developed the Alan Parsons Project.
Following their debut album “Tales Of Mystery And Imagination“ (1976), they released a series of hit albums; namely “I Robot” (1977), “Pyramid” (1978), “The Turn of a Friendly Card” (1980), “Eye in the Sky” (1982), “Ammonia Avenue” (1984), “Vulture Culture” (1985), “Stereotomy” (1986) and “Gaudi” (1987).
Then Parsons and Woolfson called it a day, but Parsons had ambitions to perform the amazing music live. Now to the great delight of his fans, for the first time on a live video and audio recording, THE ALAN PARSONS SYMPHONIC PROJECT combines the talents of his amazing band with the lush sound of a 70-piece symphony orchestra, creating a very special show with unmatched quality. Together, they revitalize hits such as “Eye In The Sky“, “Don’t Answer Me“ and “Sirius“.
The lineup consists of Alan Parsons on acoustic guitar, keys, and vocals, P.J. Olsson (lead vocals), Alastair Greene (guitar, vocals), Guy Erez (bass, vocals), Danny Thompson (drums, vocals), Tom Brooks (keyboards, vocals) und Todd Cooper (saxophone, guitar, percussion, vocals). Alejandro Posada conducts the Medellin Philharmonic Orchestra

Like Fela’s other early 70’s releases, he used each side of his LPs to create a deep groove that pulls the listener in and follows with metaphoric lyrics that call out and critique the corrupt hangover of colonialism. The album is the sound of Afrobeat’s maturation as a global music. Fela’s Pidgin English lyrics extend his music’s audience beyond Yoruba speakers and make his words understandable across the Anglophone world. In “Lady”, Fela highlights the adoption of European social habits to the detriment of African culture.

The Official Music Video for Invisible Sun. Taken from The Police – Ghost in the Machine.
I don’t want to spend the rest of my life
Looking at the barrel of an Armalite
I don’t want to spend the rest of my days
Keeping out of trouble like the soldiers say
I don’t want to spend my time in hell
Looking at the walls of a prison cell
I don’t ever want to play the part
Of a statistic on a government chart
There has to be an invisible sun
It gives its heat to everyone
There has to be an invisible sun
That gives us hope when the whole day’s done
It’s dark all day and it glows all night
Factory smoke and acetylene light
I face the day with me head caved in
Looking like something that the cat brought in
There has to be an invisible sun
It gives its heat to everyone
There has to be an invisible sun
That gives us hope when the whole day’s done
And they’re only going to change this place
By killing everybody in the human race
They would kill me for a cigarette
But I don’t even wanna die just yet
There has to be an invisible sun
It gives its heat to everyone
There has to be an invisible sun
That gives us hope when the whole day’s done
Oh oh oh oh oh oh

This is the original cover sleeve of the ‘Goodbye Horses’ single, so people can see that it is a woman singing. The picture is of Q Lazzarus. I too, initially thought it was a man singing, but knowing that it is not, does not detract from the fact that the song is amazing and powerful. The song lyrics and composition by William Garvey (who died in 2009) and sung by Q Lazzarus.
Actual lyrics are :-
GOODBYE HORSES
He told me, “I’ve seen it rise,
But, it always falls.
I’ve seen ’em come, I’ve seen ’em go.”
He said, “All things pass into the night.”
And I said, “Oh no sir, I must say you’re wrong,
I must disagree, Oh no sir, I must say you’re wrong,
Won’t you listen to me?”
He told me, “I’ve seen it all before,
I’ve been there, I’ve seen my hopes and dreams
lying on the ground.
I’ve seen the sky, just begin to fall.”
He said, “All things pass into the night”
And I said, “Oh no sir, I must say you’re wrong,
I must disagree, Oh no sir, I must say you’re wrong,
Won’t you listen to me.”
Goodbye horses, I’m flying over you.
Goodbye horses, I’m flying over you.

It’s a woman singing about a man (sung in past tense), and what he’s telling her is all very negative, to which she disagrees. It’s pretty simplistic in it’s verses. The ‘Goodbye Horses’ lyric is clearly a metaphor. There are no horses in the song.
Basically, it’s the mind we’re talking about here. ‘Goodbye Horses’ is saying goodbye to the mind. So it could just be Death on the whole. I believe Garvey intended the song to be quite uplifting, however, he didn’t have control over Q Lazzarus’ voice. But as with any song, it’s all down to interpretation (well, unless the singer says otherwise and screws that up)
A lot of people say ‘Goodbye Horses’ is about drugs, namely, cocaine. But there isn’t really any indication to that. On the flipside to the ‘Goodbye Horses’ vinyl, is a song called ‘White Lines’, which could easily be misconstrued as being about cocaine, but the lyric within the song goes ‘White lines over the ocean’. But even if the song is a reference to cocaine, it does not mean that ‘Goodbye Horses’ is.
‘Goodbye Horses’ was not written for the movie ‘The Silence Of The Lambs (1991 Jonathan Demme)’. The song was written and released in 1988, a month after the book (by Thomas Harris) was released. The song appeared in ‘Married To The Mob’ (another Demme movie) which was released in theatres across America a month after the books release, thus making it impossible.
Unfortunately Q Lazzarus only made a few songs and they are very hard to come by:-
‘The Candle Goes Away’, which featured in the 1986 movie ‘Something Wild’ staring Melanie Griffith, i believe (another Demme movie) .
‘White Lines’ which appeared on the flipside to the ‘Goodbye Horses’ vinyl.
‘Heaven’ (a cover of ‘The Talking Heads’) which appeared in the film ‘Philadelphia’ (yet another Demme movie), which you can see a clip of (on YouTube) under the title.. ‘Soul Song In The End Of The Party’, you even see Q herself, seemingly wearing the same jacket as on the Goodbye Horses cover sleeve, and wearing a hat. Unfortunately the song seems to be an in-movie song, and thus not a proper recording.
Also, Q Lazzarus wrote and composed music, alongside Danny Z, for a movie named ‘Twisted’ by director Seth Michael Donsky released in 1996. I read a review of the film by someone, who said ‘that the movie should of just been a 2 hour MTV music video, which could mean (not certain) that Q lazzarus sings some other songs…here’s hoping.
