Sounds good to me….
Pelosi Gives Bush Tax Cut Compromise The Big N-O
Speaker Nancy Pelosi will not give ground on her opposition to extending the Bush tax cuts on the wealthiest Americans, even as the White House and other Democrats have signaled that it might be time to compromise.
“It’s too costly. It’s $700 billion,” Pelosi told NPR this morning. “One year would be around $70 billion. That’s a lot of money to give a tax cut at the high end. And I remind you that those tax cuts have been in effect for a very long time, they did not create jobs.”
Pelosi’s strong stand mimics that of some of her colleagues on the Republican side of the aisle. House Minority Whip Eric Cantor told Fox News earlier this week that he was equally uninterested in compromising on the Bush cuts — he wants them all extended, and that’s that.
Nevertheless, President Obama and the White House are hoping they can hash out some kind of deal on the tax cuts when Congress reconvenes next week.
Some members of Congress signaled to to CNN recently that they might be more willing to compromise than their leaders are.
“An emerging tax cut compromise could be to temporarily extend Bush-era tax cuts for all income levels,” according to CNN. “Republican and Democratic sources say in this scenario – a short term extension across the board – both sides would be giving ground.”
Peolosi would likely not be interested in that, if her appearance on NPR this morning is any indication.

I certainly hope that President Obama & his advisors wouldn’t give away such a politically & economically valuable asset as hammering home the difference between tax cuts for the wealthiest 2% & for the middle class. I really would be very demoralized & upset if the leader of the free world would give in to the rhetoric & whine of supposedly oppressed rich Americans, both individuals & corporations. I am going to wait & see just what in the world is going on here before jumping to conclusions….
According to a recommended diary, President Obama “folded” on tax cuts. He is apparently going to allow tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans to be permanently extended. This would be very big news (and contradict what he said in his Weekly Radio Address just a week or two ago). And it would be extremely depressing.
Since this is such big news, I immediately looked for ANY sources other than Huffington Post discussing this shocking development. I found NONE. Not the New York Times. Not CNN. Not even Talking Points Memo. Even a Google News search found ONE internet link on this topic—Huffington Post. Hmm, real interesting. The President makes a major decision on a key issue, and no one except Huffington Post even discusses it. There are two possible reasons for that:
- Every other newspaper, news network or internet news source chooses to ignore it (which seems unlikely, especially in the internet area of 24-hour news and instant information) or
- Other news sources view an informal chat with a presidential advisor as NOT being indicative of the Commander-in-Chief’s decision.
I don’t think I am revealing anything shocking when I say that Huffington Post has an agenda, to promote “progressivism” as they see it by making our President look BAD. They have done it before, and they’ll do it again. Spreading rumors to anger his liberal base. The sad thing is, we here at Daily Kos fall for it. The giant headlines must scare us somehow!
I wish my fellow Kossacks would quit falling for this Huffington Post Crap!
Update: I want to make it clear I am NOT advocating that Huffington Post hide away and not report about its interview with David Axelrod. But when they take an informal, off the cuff interview with a presidential advisor and turn it into gigantic headlines claiming that Obama had reached some kind of decision and “folded” on tax cuts (when the actual interview says no such thing), Huffington Post is engaging in its own form of tabloid journalism, exaggerating what was actually said and turning it into the President’s decision, when it is no such thing!
