• Caerphilly Castle – My local Welsh castle only 5 mins from home. One of the largest in Europe and i may be biased but one of the finest. A great example of fortification with an inner and outer moat. It was built between 1268 and 1290 by Gilbert de Clare, the Norman overlord, (known as Gilbert the Red due to his shock of red hair) to defend his lands from the Welsh Prince Llywelyn the Last (Llywelyn ap Gruffydd). The Welsh attacked in 1270 disrupting building and burning it and also the castle was attacked during the Madog ap Llywelyn revolt of 1294, the Llywelyn Bren uprising in 1316 and during the overthrow of Edward II in 1326–27. Owain Glyndwr the last true prince of Wales also managed to capture the castle in 1405 and held the castle for a year in his quest to unify Wales as an independent nation. If you visit Cardiff this should be must for any tourist only 15 mins away by train. by the_roving_sheephttp://flic.kr/p/wsz6f6
