Hubble View of a Nitrogen-Rich Nebula by NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Via Flickr: This NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image shows a planetary nebula named NGC 6153, located about 4,000 light-years away in the southern constellation of Scorpius (The Scorpion). The faint blue haze across the frame shows what remains of a star like the sun after it has depleted most of its fuel. When this happens, the outer layers of the star are ejected, and get excited and ionized by the energetic ultraviolet light emitted by the bright hot core of the star, forming the nebula. NGC 6153 is a planetary nebula that is elliptical in shape, with an extremely rich network of loops and filaments, shown clearly in this Hubble image. However, this is not what makes this planetary nebula so interesting for astronomers. Measurements show that NGC 6153 contains large amounts of neon, argon, oxygen, carbon and chlorine — up to three times more than can be found in the solar system. The nebula contains a whopping five times more nitrogen than our sun! Although it may be that the star developed higher levels of these elements as it grew and evolved, it is more likely that the star originally formed from a cloud of material that already contained a lot more of these elements. Cygnus by .Rem FER06 Via Flickr: First test with my star adventurer mount. This was shot with my usual unmodified Sony Nex 3N with a Canon FD 50mm f/1.4 lens. 13 exposures @f/2.4 ISO 3200 and 120s. No dark, flat or other… Most noticeable in this shoot is the North America nebula and the million stars.

NGC 7380 Wizard Nebula – We’re off to see the wizard… Lying at a distance of 8,000 light years, this cloud of gas and dust appears to span nearly one degree across. Its low surface brightness however makes this a challenging subject. This image was captured under the dark skies of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Telescope: 12″ aperture at f/5. M42, the Great Orion Nebula – The Great Orion Nebula (M42) and its companion, the Running Man Nebula (NGC1977), are located in the ‘Sword’ part of the constellation of Orion, just below the easternmost of the three stars that comprise Orion’s belt. Approximately 1500 light years away, M42 is a turbulent cloud of gas and dust, and a star-forming region of particular interest to astro-geeks like me. M31, Andromeda Galaxy [explored] – You all know this one … Andromeda is the nearest large galaxy to the Milky Way (approx 2.5 million ly away), and similar to ours in size and structure. It’s huge – even at that distance it appears about 6 full moons across. M31 is so bright that it can be seen with the naked eye from dark skies, and I regularly catch it through binoculars even from downtown Toronto. She also has a couple of companion galaxies – M32 is the small one above it, and M110 is the elliptical one below it. All of the (non-galaxy) stars in this field are part of our Milky Way, and relatively nearby – positioned between us and the distant galaxies. Think of it as if you’re looking through snowflakes at a distant object. NGC 281, H-alpha, Oiii, RGB – H-alpha = 180 minutes OIII = 330 minutes RGB (stars) = 60:60:60 minutes Camera = QSI 583wsg Telescope = TEC 140 Mount = AP Mach One Beverage = The Glenlivet 12 Location: downtown Toronto, Canada Date: Three nights in Aug/Sep/Oct 2014 Software = capture and alignment in Maxim DL, post-processing in PS CS5 So what is this thing? NGC 281 is located roughly 9,200 light years away in the constellation Cassiopeia. The massive stars in the middle of this nebula are shaping their environment through powerful stellar winds and intense radiation. They heat up the surrounding gas, causing it to emit light, and forming the pillars you see on the right side of the scene. Opaque dust clouds – dark nebulae – block some of the light emitted by these glowing gases. To capture all this, I combined images captured in narrow wavelengths of light emitted by oxygen and hydrogen atoms, and then later captured standard RGB frames just for the star field (stars in narrowband composites can look pretty strange).
