• Untitled by hawaiiansupaman Via Flickr: Panorama of a moonlit cinder cone on the south east rift zone of Haleakala. The structure on the top of the far cinder cone is a communication repeater tower. The observatories most people are familiar with are on the other side of it. I parked right below the summit parking lot and did a short, forty minute hike down. Absolutely no wind. The only sounds were from the u`au birds and my breath. Gives you a perspective of the hike to get here and the sense of solitude. No, there was no fear of the darkness. Just a sense of awe from the incredible beauty of this fascinating place. Across the Alenuihaha Channel are the peaks of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa with the arc of the rising Milky Way above them.
