Photo by @nickcobbing from an expedition on Svalbard this summer. This male bearded seal was relaxing on a piece of glacial ice in a fjord. As with all the ice dependent Arctic seals, bearded seals are facing new challenges. Sea ice has been declining in the fjords around the Arctic archipelago, where I photographed this one. The bearded seal’s future is also linked to the polar bears of Svalbard. Bearded seals are the most important food source for polar bears that have remained in shore rather than going out onto the sea ice to hunt. by natgeo http://ift.tt/1MBmKzV

Photo by @TimLaman. Do the Garden Eel dance! These unusual fish are long, thin eels that make holes in the sand where they live. They emerge and sway in unison to the current, watching for passing plankton to feed on. This species, the Cortez Garden Eel, is unique to the Eastern Tropical Pacific region. I photographed it at Coiba Island, Panama, where together with my colleague @ChristianZiegler, I am working on a photo essay to celebrate Coiba National Park and its amazing biodiversity. #Coiba, #Panama, #conservation, @thephotosociety, @iLCP_photographers, @natgeocreative, @TimLaman. by natgeo http://ift.tt/1MBmNf2

@natgeo @stevewinterphoto I was working on a story for @natgeo on the creation of the world’s largest tiger reserve in Hukaung Valley in Myanmar. I had just arrived into Tanai the border town on the edge of the valley, driving on the Burma road which had just opened – the first time since 1945. When I got into town I saw people everywhere with Toyota HiLux pickup trucks all jacked up, full of hoses and water pumps and people. I asked what was going on and was told that 10’s of thousands of people had come in to the valley as gold was discovered. As this story was supposed to be about the animals of the valley and how scientists measure the quantity and type of animals in the valley, Well I got really bummed out – walked out onto a bridge to look at the moon and saw all these small homemade rafts and boats with little oil lamps in them floating down the river – I asked what was going on and I was told that I came at a very important time that this was the Buddhist Festival of Lights. I spent over an hour on the bridge and calmed down and decided that if the story had changed then I would change my focus and that is what I would cover. I learned so much about the local people in the area – how gold mining works and that you cannot eat the same food of the tiger and expect the tiger to survive, as all these miners did not bring a supermarket with them, they were hunting in the forests. Traders came from China as the Burma road had opened and they were looking for endangered species to sell back in their country. This was my education on Asian jungles, people and trade, in the field on the ground. End result – after the story came out – the gold mines were shut down. this is a one minute exposure. follow me @stevewinterphoto to see other images, thanks! @natgeo @thephotosociety @natgeocreative #bigcatsforever #ivoryfree #wildaid #bigcatsforever #beauty #me #follow #love #leopards #photooftheday #5forbigcats @eiainvestigator #rhinoswithoutborders #cute #racingextinction #startwith1thing by natgeo http://ift.tt/1K9AawW

Photo by @stephenwilkes: Some time ago I had the opportunity to shoot with an antique lens that was over 100 years old. Almost simultaneously, I was asked to shoot a class of elite young ballerinas. Inspired by Degas and his many ballet paintings, I blended the two creating works reminiscent of another time. To see more, follow my account @stephenwilkes–I’ll be sharing more from this series this weekend. #ballet #Degas #impressionism #art #dance by natgeo http://ift.tt/1K9A6gG

photo by @joelsartore | Check out this pair of black lemurs from the @stlzoo! This is a sexually dimorphic species, meaning males and females have striking physical differences (the girl is brown and obviously shy). Black lemurs come from the forests of Madagascar, using their long tails for balance as they jump and climb. To learn more about the St. Louis Zoo’s conservation program for lemurs and other wildlife, go to http://ift.tt/1MjiYqm. #Follow me, @joelsartore, to see more of my recent work. #joelsartore #photoark #photooftheday by natgeo http://ift.tt/1K9A5sY

Photo by @mattiasklumofficial Borneo is on fire and the already severely threatened orangutan is under even higher pressure! The 2015 forest fires are the worst in many years, rivaled only by the fires of 1997, during which as many as 13 million hectares of rainforest in Borneo and Sumatra were burned. Pressure is mounting on Indonesia to control the raging fires that continue to cloak the country and its South-east Asian neighbours in a hazardous haze. Due to irresponsible and illegal logging operations, palm oil industry and the current fires, orangutan rehabilitation centers like Nyaru Menteng in Central Kalimantan, Borneo are filled to the brim with orphaned orangutan babies like this one! Go to @mattiasklumofficial to see a wild adult female and her baby, sharing yellow durian fruit some 50 meters (150 feet) up in the canopy, photographed from one of my tree blinds in Danum Valley, Malaysian Borneo. An increasing number of wild orangutans will be sentenced to a long life in captivity or killed by poaching, logging operations or the current fires. Help save the orangutan and the rainforest! Support organizations like WWF or BOS and by sharing this message!
