• Photo taken by @stevemccurryofficial // On the edge of the Thar Desert is Jodhpur, once the capital of a princely state. Its medieval quarter, surrounded by a ten-kilometer wall, is a maze of alleyways, often only wide enough for a man or a cow to pass. There are no cars or motorcycles, only vendors hawking their wares on foot. The old city is blue. Local guides say that the blue wash of the houses originally indicated the homes of the upper-caste Brahmins, custodians of holy places and the written word. Others contradict this, saying buildings used to be painted white, before the discovery that copper sulfate added to the white-lime-wash- turning it blue- deterred nesting termites. Whichever version is true, the color caught on. Varieties of blue, from royal blue to aquamarine, form the backdrop for a theatre of colour played out its streets, contrasting with the parched landscape of the surrounding desert. by natgeo http://ift.tt/1LgGTeL

• Photo: @stevewinterphoto. Had a full house last night at the Sydney Opera House for my NG Live presentation -#Sydney thank you for showing up and all the positive reviews! I photographed this #baby #elephant with her mother in Sri Lanka while #onassignment for my upcoming @NatGeo story on #leopards, due out in the December issue. Every 15 minutes an #elephant is killed for its ivory. We need to make owning ivory an act unbecoming of a civilized people. We need to all become people who respect the lives of elephants and their right to walk this earth as they have for 1000’s of years – free and safe from harm by humans. Please check out the new @natgeo TRACKING IVORY cover story – incredible and important reporting by Bryan Christy with exceptional images by #BrentStirton. Here are some organizations that are making strides in protecting elephants: The Nature Conservancy in Africa (@nature_africa), The Nature Conservancy (@nature_org), The Northern Rangelands Trust (@nrt_kenya) Lewa Wildlife Conservancy (@lewa_wildlife) http://ift.tt/1CkG6lE http://ift.tt/16NUfKa I’ve been touring with NatGeo Live, presenting my My Nine Lives talk about my experiences photographing #BigCats, many of which are endangered. National Geographic launched the Big Cats Initiative to raise awareness and implement change to the dire situation facing big cats. Please visit CauseAnUproar.org to find out more ways to become involved to save big cats! • Photo by @edkashi/ @viiphoto: The Golden Quadrilateral Highway project is one of India’s largest and most ambitious infrastructure projects that took nearly 2 decades to complete. This super highway connects the four major cities of India: New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai. As the number of vehicles traveling on this infrastructure continues to increase, #emissions like Carbon Dioxide and Methane also increase. According to Climate Progress, as carbon emissions continue to increase, “heat events once considered extreme would become relatively common…A searing and continuing heat wave in India has so far killed more than 2,300 people, making it the 5th deadliest in recorded world history.” @everydayclimatechange #heatwave #india #climatechange #emissions #transportation #highway by natgeo http://ift.tt/1Lh84pZ
