The ruins of Paricutin, Mexico. Photo by @salvarezphoto (Stephen Alvarez) In 1943 lava from the erupting Paricutin volcano consumed the town of the same name leaving only the tower and part of the church nave as a reminder of the community that once stood here. The eruption itself lasted 9 years. Even though the volcano has been extinct since 1952 the lava field still steams in the cool early morning air. #lumiaxnatgeo #Mexico #Paricutin @lumiaxnatgeo by natgeo http://ift.tt/1Vo2h4Q
