On Monday 2 June 2026, a Telegram post appeared on the channel of Igor Girkin — known by his nom de guerre Strelkov — the former colonel of Russia’s Federal Security Service who personally led the Russian armed seizure of Sloviansk in April 2014, who admitted in his own words to “pulling the trigger” of the war in eastern Ukraine, and who is currently serving a four-year sentence in a prison colony in Russia’s Kirov region.
