LAAKSUM, stood around 1500 all clowna for fishing on flounder on the Vrouwenzand, a shoal in the former Zuiderzee along the southern edge of the province of Friesland. In 1680 is mentioned that the inhabitants of the hamlet itself involved in eel fishing. After the construction of the Afsluitdijk slumped Laaksum in fisheries. There was still some time on eel fishing, but that turned out not to be profitable. At the port of Laaxum is still the Hang, the building where herring were salted and smoked in the past. These were mostly exported to Germany as Lemster red herring. by roprik via http://flic.kr/p/w3tesD
