Silicon Bites Ep364 | 2026-07-09 | Three thousand kilometres to Omsk — the night Siberia stopped being a sanctuary. RUSSIA HAS LOST ITS REAR: On the 6th of July 2026, Ukrainian long-range drones flew up to 3,000 kilometres — past the Urals, to the edge of Kazakhstan — and struck the Omsk refinery, the largest oil-processing plant in the Russian Federation, for the first time in the war. The deepest strike of the entire full-scale invasion. The last of Russia’s eleven biggest gasoline producers to be hit. And the end of the one strategic asset Moscow believed no enemy could ever take from it: distance. Zelensky’s verdict, in his evening address: “Siberia, too, is now within reach of Ukrainian precision strikes.” That single sentence rewrites the geography of this war. Scale and depth are no longer a protection or strength for Russia, but a vulnerability.

“Drafting troops from St Petersburg and Moscow would be a massive gamble.”
The strikes on St Petersburg and Moscow are making Putin’s grip on power “more tenuous”, as the cities are home to the Russian leader’s largest support base: the oligarchs, says Cormac Smith, a former British diplomat to Ukraine.

The longer the Ukraine war continues, the more Putin loses touch with reality. With the fuel crisis in Russia and the Crimea siege, Russians are unhappy with Putin more than ever before. Recently Putin was interviewed by Russian TV about the fuel shortage, and it’s one of the most embarrassing interviews he’s ever done. Let’s react to Putin’s cope and see why Russians are making fun of this interview.
